Tearful eyes are a common problem, principally in the elderly. It may result from increased tear production or reduced tear drainage. If the effect is seen in one eye only, this may be caused by lachrymal duct stenosis.
If the tear duct is blocked, the eye should be examined by an ophthalmologist to determine whether surgery is necessary to insert a tube or open the lachrymal punctum (the opening by which tears enter the eye).
