Common questions about cataract

  • Common questions about cataract

How many procedures are performed at Stockholms Ögonklinik each year?

Nearly 4,000. All of our eye surgeons have carried out thousands of procedures and have more than 10 years’ experience of cataract surgery.

Will I ever need to have the new lens changed?

The material of the artificial lens does not age, but some patients experience that their sight deteriorates as they get older. The lens capsule that remains may become cloudy, this is known as “post-cataract” and it can be easily treated with laser.

Will I have to stay overnight in hospital?

No, you can return home directly after the surgery.

Will I always see the same doctor?

Yes, the same doctor will deal with the preliminary investigations, the surgery, and follow up.

    How is anaesthesia applied?

The eye is anaesthetised with eyedrops that prevent the feeling of pain, without affecting the sensitivity of the eye to touch.

Can lasers be used to treat cataract?

No, the technique used in cataract surgery is ultrasound, which breaks up the lens into fragments that can be extracted by suction. We use the latest available technology at Stockholms Ögonklinik.

What other factors affect the result of the procedure?

Another eye condition, such as age-related macular degeneration, may affect the result. Any such conditions will limit how successful the result will be.

Can both eyes be treated at the same time?

We generally prefer to wait after performing surgery on one eye, but the interval does not have to be very long. Both eyes can undergo surgery on the same day in special circumstances. ICL procedures are always carried out on both eyes on the same occasion.

How big are the risks associated with the procedure?

We use modern technology at cataract surgery at Stockholms Ögonklinik. This is very safe, and involves a very low risk of complications. If the eye is otherwise healthy, the risk of complications that lead to impairment of sight is less than one per thousand. We have the highest quality ranking of eye clinics in Stockholm.
